Meet Eva!

As always, we wanted to find out more about our latest contest winner, so here is a little e-mail interview with Eva, whose lovely dress made it to number one in the January challenge. Enjoy!

Congratulations on winning our “Let your shoes be your muse” contest, Eva! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself, where you live, who you are and what you do?

I live in Maine.  I’m a stay-at-home-mom.  I’ve always loved design.  I did a year of photography in college.  I’ve done floral design, landscape design, and painting…. and now I design my own dresses.

Do you sew your own clothes? And if so, what do you like about it?

I got sick of not being able to find what I wanted in the retail stores.  I wanted modest, flattering, feminine styles and I liked classic, vintage inspired designs.  I decided to save time and money and make my own clothes.  I’ve been sewing for 2 years now.  I make almost all of my own clothes: dresses, skirts, blouses, slips, nightgowns, etc.   I like to try to make a garment for under $10.  I get fabric at thrift stores and discount bins and  I get patterns from yard sales and when they’re on sale.  I have also just started learning how to do flat pattern drafting!    I sew in my spare time.  Sewing has become a creative outlet for me : )  I save money and get exactly what I want to wear!

What is your favourite piece of clothing in your wardrobe, the one you couldn’t live without?

I’d have to say my full slips.  They’re a simple, flattering style and I couldn’t wear my dresses without them, and they double as nightwear too ; )

Your sketch looks quite professional – how do you draw your designs? What tools do you use?

I actually sketched the silhouette by tracing a picture of a model.  I saved copies of a couple basic outlines and then just draw my designs on top of them.

Any tips for beginners who want to scribble something for our contests?

It’s a lot easier to sketch design ideas once you have a basic model to put them on.  You could use a paper doll, or any other figure, to start with, then make copies of it and draw your outfits in place.

Thank you very much, Eva! We’d love to see more from you here on Your Style Rocks! in the future!
