Hey, thanks :) I will continue to add to the pinterest board http://pinterest.com/futuralon/embellish.. as the contest continues.
I will say that a lot of modern (US) clothing right now relies on draping to achieve interest and there is not much emphasis on embellishment. Vintage style - for instance detachable-collar dress of the city lady circa 1930, the embellished cocktail dress they wore on Saturday nights, or the hand worked and pintucked little outfits they put their babies in - might be a more fruitful place to hunt for ideas.

Are you all thinking about designing a garment for the latest contest?
Embellished tanks and tunics often come in as a trend in summer. Come winter embellishment is popular with cocktail dresses, blouses, jackets and formal trousers. Special occasion style is the natural home of fancies like lace, chiffon, beads and sequins. But you may not have to look further than your bedroom for a little something with lace trim, ruffles, ribbon and bows. What's your favorite embellished garment? (Mine is the tunic!)
I have put together some ideas on a pinterest board, check it out at http://pinterest.com/futuralon/embellish..
As you can see I lean towards edgy colors like black and simpler work like tucks. Others prefer embroidery, crochet trims, fancy dying techniques, bows and fabric flowers, and sparkle. If you would like me to add you as a board contributor, let me know ;) futuralon@gmail.com

I also want to see plus sizes. There are a million and one cute dresses already made out there for smaller sizes - whereas plus size dresses either are hard to find, not cute, not fitting properly, or are really expensive. So a lot of "plus size" women are especially motivated to sew. You're missing out on a large, keen, group of women here.

Might I also add that unless your target audience is really young, the majority of women won't fall into your sizes range?

By the way, your Australian size comparisons are wrong. I'm a size 16-18 Australian, and I am too large for your Australian "size 20" - the maximum size offered. Also, no one calls me "fat" except the fashion industry, I'm just tall, like Western women increasingly are over time.

I am tired of the stigma surrounding fatshion. I am tired of the fact that it is a taboo subject in most fashion schools, or added as an afterthought. It is not considered "glamourous". It is all very straightforward to make basic fit patterns conforming close to the skeleton (thin women); the deep knowledge required to *really* fit the contours of the body seems to be unimportant because fat (or rather, not thin) is considered uninteresting or unattractive. I am tired of the fact that only private companies seem to have proper biometric data on larger women, and won't share it.

I understand you don't have technical knowledge of larger sizes, and the probable reason why. That is a shame. I get that it's not as simple as just grading up, you'd have to redesign the block to accurately go much larger.

I was all set to recommend this site on my twitter when I thought you really were offering up to an Australian size 20 - but only really an Australian size 14 - the maximum size available in most shops. So redundant to most sewers I know. Sigh, not another one, etc.

But thankyou very much for the free patterns anyway.

I think after sewing for a year you should be able to make a wide variety of garments - tops, dresses, pyjamas, casual pants - out of woven and some stretch fabrics. Only the most difficult patterns (with lots of seaming and details like ruffles, lots of curved seams, or precision stitching like pintucks) or fabrics (slippery or particularly stretchy) intimidate me but I'm sure in just a few years they won't be a problem (if I maintain my desire to learn).
I have been sewing for less than a year. Most of the time I try to make each project more difficult than the last - by incorporating a new-to-me element. For instance pyjamas is one thing. Matching a pattern or stripe on the same pyjama is more difficult. My progress hasn't been amazing but I've been trying to average one garment a month and this is a fair goal for me.
A year is about 50 Sundays of sewing. If you took a class learning something new - how to drive, or write code, or speak French - it would be pretty boring if the teacher didn't let you drive on the road, run any programs you've written, or have a conversation after all that time. It would be a boring class after four Sundays.
Just like in a class, when you teach yourself something you have to have small goals culminating in a big or expensive project. And just like a class you can't just do projects and expect each one to be better than the last. You have to read books and articles on technique, read blogs for other people's practical knowledge, get inspiration from fashion pictures, go shopping for patterns and new fabrics, cast a critical eye on your results and on ready-to-wear, and generally be engaged with the learning process.
One other thing you'll need to learn - encoragement! if not from your mom, then from us! You can totally make an outfit after 50 Sundays of sewing - a nice one as good as something from the mall. For me learning to sew is worth it because I want garments with a custom fit (and pockets, lol). For whatever reason YOU want to sew, take that good reason, buckle down, and in a year give your mom a big surprise :)

P.S. As far as fabric you could try sweatshirt fabric which has some stretch, if you can even find any, and if you've gained experience with stretch. For a non-strech fabric, cozy polar fleece and cotton flannel are both super easy to work with.

Since the bolero is so short you don't need to pay attention to the waist. For your bust size you should be fine with size 12. "Our Own Pretty Ways" is one of our easier patterns - you should totally go for it, any mistakes you might make will just add to your experience! And of course you can always come here and ask if you get stuck.

Any heavy, stretchable fabric is fine but since you're quite new to sewing I'd suggest that you make a trial piece first (maybe from old PJs) before you use a nice, expensive fabric.

Would be great to hear about your progress!

swenny, you should really print the pattern again and make sure it's the right size - ten percent smaller is a BIG difference. It's a good idea to first print out only the page with the 5x5" square to check that the printer settings are correct before you print all pages!

Forgive my questions, as I am very very new to sewing.

First of all, I LOVE the "Our Own Pretty Ways" pattern. I'm going to tackle some other sewing projects first, since again I'm very new, but I am gearing up to make this one my BIG "exam" project.

My question is, I'm not quite sure of my size, and I don't quite understand the size comparison table. I'm a 36" in the bust, 40" in the shoulders and 32" in the waist. What size would I be??

Also, am I right in thinking I should use cotton/blends for fabric? Or would someone else suggest something different?

PS: How difficult is this pattern? My mother says sewing is incredibly hard, and I won't be ready for anything more than basic projects (aprons, pin cushions) for at least a year. Do you think that's true? I don't want to get ahead of myself!

Thank you!!

I just found this site, and I LOVE this dress. I bought some fabric this afternoon on the market. And it's now hanging to dry. And I really hope I can put this together. I already printed and cut out the patterns. Though I made a mistake and the 5x5 inch box is 4,5x4,5 with me. But I think I can fit into this dress too with this half inch shorter printed out pattern.

When It's finished and I can fit into, I'll show it here.

Thanks again. And I love this site already! :-)

Just thought I'd add this: tall women and short women have two main measurements that are probably different than the standard size. Length above the waist, and length below the waist. You need to compare your underbust (bottom of the bra) to waist (on your front, measured vertically) length to the standard, and seat to hem length to the standard. (For skirts only the seat to hem length will apply.) Sometimes your waist to seat may also be shorter than standard. Many dresses have no waist seam but the waist level may be marked. "Shorten or lengthen here" instructions can be in each location. After adjusting the pattern (by cutting and taping), smoothing of the other lines will be required but should be fairly straightforward.
I see a lot of fuss and complaints about how this or that dress is imperfect - or (worse) women complaining about their thunder thighs or linebacker shoulders and how hard is it to find patterns to fit. There's no reason to knock the bodies we are living in. I think of it this way. A pattern is a starting point. The pattern makers have done the hard work of creating style lines, adding ease, and so forth. It's up to you to adjust the off-the-shelf sizing to your own personal sizing. Basically no one is ever "average." It does help a lot when a pattern company defines the amount of ease in each dress and provides a diagram of the standard measurements of the faux-person average figure.
But absent these numbers, a mockup or muslin of the dress will answer a lot of these problems - and provide answers that may carry over into the next dress by the same pattern maker. Muslins may also help with the half-inch here-and-there issues for fitted clothes. You'll learn a lot from adjusting a fitted dress. Taking precision measurements and fitting a shell will give you more answers than any regular pattern can.
Best of luck finding your fit.

Here's my version I made in February. I didn't know about the red dress competition pattern review had until it was too late. So here's another red Eva Dress. The dress came together quickly. The only modification I made was that I chopped off 10 inches from the hem because I'm 5'2''

I haven't sewn in a year or so, so just to reassure myself do I line up the "Grainline" on the eva dress pattern with the part of the fabric that stretches more or the part that stretches less?
Thanks! I'm excited to give this a try!

Like most other patterns ours usually indicate where you can shorten or lengthen pieces to adjust them to your height (e.g. at the waistline). And of course it is always very easy to experiment with skirt lengths as well. As always we recommend that you sew a sample piece, try it on and adjust where necessary.

Accessories! It would be such a change from the regular clothing patterns. Scarves, hats, gloves, bags, belts and headbands! And who knows what else!

Or....outerwear. Coats and such. Or jackets. I'm just thinking that by the time this contest will come around, the pattern will be released in the winter time.....so, yeah. :)

I recently completed the Eva dress, and have to say the it sewed up beautifully in the merino knit I used. Here is a pic:

Simple question here; are all the patterns really only made for people 5 1/2 feet in height? That would be a problem for me because I'm only 5 feet tall... half a foot is quite a difference, and I imagine that it would be a pain to alter out so much from every pattern I used, and chances are I would just mess it up and end up too frustrated to bother with it. The half inch too big on the bust and waist I can deal with, but having to deal with so much off the height (not to mention that it won't always be the same amount depending on the length of the garment) might be a problem.
